What is Capital Punishment?
Depending on the country, capital punishment is generally applied to serious forms of murder. However, some countries enforce capital punishment for other types of crime including rape, fraud and drug trafficking.
- Offers retribution or justice
- Rehabilitation
- Prevention of re-offending
- Acts as a detterent and reduces crime rates
- Closure and vindication
- Encourages public to help the police in criminal investigations
- Society values human life, therefore the death penalty is hypocritical
- Retribution is not justice
- Does not deter people from comitting a crime
- Brutalises an already violent society
- The finanicial costs is more to kill them than housing them in prison.
- The system isn't infallible and therefore innocent people are at risk of being executed.
- Barbaric, inhumane and cruel.
